New analysis: bamboo toilet paper can emit more than wood-based tissue

A recent analysis suggests that, with today’s manufacturing set-ups, bamboo toilet paper can generate more climate-warming emissions than standard wood-based tissue.

That result runs against the common assumption that bamboo rolls are automatically the greener choice.

It also recasts the toilet-roll aisle as a decision shaped less by the plant fibre on the label and more by factors such as factory power sources, drying equipment and the everyday hygiene routines people depend on.

Counting the carbon cost

One assessment tracked toilet tissue from pulp production through to disposal and tallied the associated climate pollution. Following that pathway, researcher Naycari Forfora at North Carolina State University (NC State) found that the biggest share of emissions came from the fuels and electricity used at the mill.

Forfora estimated the difference at about 500 pounds (roughly 230 kg) of climate-warming pollution per ton (per tonne) when comparing wood tissue with bamboo blends.

In other words, the branding on the packaging mattered less than where a factory sourced its energy and the method it used to dry the paper.

The coal factor

A large portion of bamboo’s impact in the analysis was linked to the energy required to cook the fibres and dry the sheets into soft tissue.

In the Chinese mills used to model bamboo pulp, coal provided a substantial share of both heat and electricity.

Shipping long distances contributed less than many people assume, because the most polluting stages occurred before the finished rolls were transported.

Because cleaner electricity and more efficient mills could reduce the difference, NC State treated bamboo’s result as strongly dependent on location.

Softness comes at a cost

In the analysis, the push for softness often meant extra drying-and that drying step mattered more than whether the fibre started as bamboo or wood.

Through-air drying (TDA), a hot-air approach that dries the sheet without heavy contact, required far more electricity than the more common drum-drying process.

Under the same United States conditions, this higher-end drying increased climate emissions by about 39% compared with lower-energy tissue machines.

For anyone buying the softest roll available, the bigger environmental trade-off may be the energy used in production rather than the crop the pulp came from.

Bidets reduce paper use

Water-based cleansing addresses toilet paper’s main purpose by rinsing residue away rather than smearing it.

Bidets and bidet attachments have been used for centuries, directing a controlled stream where needed and then sending waste into the bowl.

A World Health Organization sanitary inspection form lists water alongside toilet paper as an option for anal cleansing.

That same guidance links the choice of cleaning method to the toilet’s design, meaning water tends to work best where the toilet system is set up to support it.

Drying stays essential

Even after rinsing, skin remains wet, so any water-based approach still needs a drying step that feels comfortable.

Toilet paper dries quickly because its fibres absorb moisture, but using single-use paper keeps the manufacturing footprint relevant.

With reusable cloths or small towels, households can reduce paper consumption, and routine laundering removes residues that might otherwise spread.

It also matters that towels are separate and clearly labelled, as sharing a damp cloth can transfer germs between people living in the same household.

Sewer system strain

Moist toilet wipes may feel convenient, but many sewer systems effectively treat them as rubbish because they do not break down.

Unlike toilet paper, many wipes contain synthetic fibres that stay intact, catch grease and form stubborn clumps in pipes.

German environmental authorities have warned that wet wipes are a poor substitute for toilet paper because they do not decompose in the same way in wastewater systems.

A “flushable” label does not change how wipes behave in water, and the expense of blocked pipes and damaged pumps often ends up with councils and homeowners.

Plumbing sets the limit

Whether a bidet is straightforward to use often comes down to space and plumbing-particularly in older bathrooms where there is little room around the toilet.

Wall-mounted bidet sprayers and toilet-seat attachments can be connected to the water supply line, offering control without major renovation.

Travel bidets avoid tools and plumbing altogether, as users fill a small bottle and squeeze water through a nozzle.

Cold water, low pressure or inconsistent cleaning habits can reduce the advantage, so many people use water along with a small amount of paper.

Comfort and cost

Over time, buying less paper can reduce household spending, and many people also prefer less rubbing after a bowel movement.

Although a basic bidet attachment requires an upfront purchase, it can operate for years using only water and simple cleaning.

Online guides increasingly package the idea as one of ten household life hacks, but making it work day to day still takes practice.

Once it becomes routine, many households can keep toilet paper as a back-up rather than relying on it as the main option every time.

A smarter eco label

Marketing often focuses on the number of trees supposedly saved, yet the real climate calculation depends on electricity, fuels and factory design decisions.

A life cycle assessment-an end-to-end tally from raw fibre through to disposal-prevents those less visible steps from being overlooked.

When people compare sustainability, the energy used in manufacturing and the drying method can outweigh whether the fibre came from bamboo or trees.

More transparent labels that state the production energy source and the country of manufacture could help shoppers choose lower-impact products without needing specialist knowledge.

Practical choices at home

For many households, the most effective approach is not simply swapping one roll for another, but combining water-based cleaning, thoughtful drying and fewer disposable items.

As manufacturers shift towards cleaner energy, policy and product claims may matter more, because the same fibre can look very different once emissions are calculated.
