Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro: inReach satellite connectivity for pilots

Garmin’s D2 Mach 2 Pro is a new top-tier smartwatch built specifically for pilots. For the first time in the D2 range, it includes inReach technology, enabling you to stay reachable via satellite and mobile networks without needing a smartphone.

Garmin is widely known for sports watches, but it also makes specialist aviation models. Until now, pilots who wanted Garmin’s inReach features had to carry a separate dedicated device alongside their watch. With the D2 Mach 2 Pro, those capabilities are built into the watch itself. From your wrist, you can place calls, send messages and share your location in real time using LiveTrack, all without a smartphone.

In an emergency, a dedicated SOS button sends an alert to the Garmin Response coordination centre, operating 24/7. This is likely the product’s strongest selling point: an independent lifeline for pilots who regularly fly in areas with limited coverage from conventional mobile networks.

The headline change is full integration of inReach on the D2 line, combining satellite reachability with cellular connectivity directly on the watch so you can remain contactable even when your phone is not.

Hardware: AMOLED display, materials and battery life

On the hardware side, the Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro features a highly bright 1.4-inch AMOLED display designed to be easy to read in the cockpit. The 51 mm case is paired with a titanium bezel finished in Carbon Gray DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon). Garmin includes two QuickFit straps in the box: one Chestnut leather strap and one silicone strap.

Speakers and microphones are built in so you can take calls directly from the watch. Garmin also claims up to 24 days of battery life in standard watch mode.

A cockpit on your wrist at a premium price

As you would expect, the D2 Mach 2 Pro comes packed with pilot-focused tools: advanced aeronautical charts, avionics connectivity (via the Garmin Pilot app on iOS), aviation weather reports, PlaneSync support and voice commands.

A Red Shift mode switches the entire interface to red to keep it readable for night flying. The watch also offers in-flight biometric tracking, an LED torch with both white and red light, and more than 100 sports activities for everyday use outside the cockpit.

Garmin’s pricing may make mainstream buyers wince, as the D2 Mach 2 Pro is listed at 1,549 dollars. Satellite connectivity also requires an active subscription (price not stated). There are other constraints to note: avionics linking is limited to iOS users, and neither LTE nor satellite services are available in every country.
