Some people can get through an awful day without losing their cool, while others feel as if they are about to snap. One person brushes off a traffic jam or a curt email; another is tense and irritable before lunchtime.
What explains that gap? Evidence is increasingly pointing to physical fitness. New research indicates that your level of fitness can influence how strongly you respond to stress, anxiety and anger.
Put simply, exercising regularly may help you cope better when things go wrong. Researchers at the Federal University of Goiás set out to test whether cardiorespiratory fitness does more than support the heart and lungs-whether it also helps to protect emotional wellbeing.
Fitness and anxiety: A big difference
To examine this, scientists worked with 40 healthy young adults who were shown distressing images, including violent scenes and footage of accidents. Anxiety and anger were assessed both before and after participants viewed the material.
The contrast between fitness levels was substantial. Participants with below average cardiorespiratory fitness had a 775 percent higher risk of reaching high anxiety levels in stressful situations than those with above average fitness.
In practical terms, poorer fitness made someone almost eight times more likely to experience a pronounced surge in anxiety.
Those in the less fit group showed far larger increases in anxiety after seeing upsetting content, whereas fitter participants had much smaller shifts.
Fitness appeared to act as emotional armour: images that heavily unsettled one person had relatively little effect on someone with higher fitness.
Anger control and cardio fitness
The study also highlighted clear differences in anger responses.
Lower fitness was linked with greater emotional instability. Anger rose more readily and felt more difficult to manage. When exposed to disturbing images, participants with below average fitness showed sharp increases in anger.
The researchers also factored in personality traits. Even once personality was taken into account, higher fitness still predicted smaller anger increases during stressful exposure.
For people who typically express anger openly, the spikes were larger when they encountered upsetting content. In those situations, fitness seemed particularly protective: better cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with reduced emotional volatility.
Exercise, then, is not only about building strength-it may alter how the brain reacts when frustration hits.
Exercise helps the brain
Physical activity improves the way the body manages stress. Regular aerobic exercise reinforces the stress-response system and helps the nervous system stay more balanced. After a stressful event, heart rate and breathing tend to settle back to normal more quickly.
Exercise also boosts blood flow to the brain. Greater circulation supports the growth of new brain cells and strengthens connections between regions of the brain, changes that can improve emotional regulation.
Unlike medication, exercise does not come with harmful side effects. Research indicates that physical activity can ease symptoms of anxiety and depression in healthy adults, in people living with mental health conditions, and in individuals with chronic diseases.
Even a single workout can reduce anxiety, while consistent exercise builds stronger protection over time.
“Regular physical exercise can be a useful non-pharmacological strategy for anger management,” wrote the researchers.
Modern life is full of stress
Everyday life is packed with potential stressors. Traffic congestion, school exams, work deadlines, financial worries, relationship tensions and arguments on social media can accumulate quickly.
The researchers wanted to understand whether fitness changes how people experience these common pressures.
Participants were split into two groups: above average fitness and below average fitness. Fitness was estimated using exercise habits, age, body mass index and sex.
Across two laboratory visits, each participant sat in a dark room and viewed 69 images for 30 minutes. Some images were neutral; others were disturbing. Heart rate, anxiety and anger were recorded before and after the viewing.
After the upsetting images, anxiety scores rose by about 12 points on average in the below average fitness group. In the above average fitness group, the increases were much smaller.
In effect, fitness acted like a shock absorber: stress was still present, but its emotional impact was blunted.
The vicious cycle
One message from the findings is that anxiety and low fitness can intensify each other.
When stress mounts, the motivation to exercise often drops away. People can feel exhausted, overwhelmed or disheartened, so workouts are delayed and overall activity declines. As fitness falls over time, the body can become even more reactive to stress.
Lower fitness can worsen anxiety, and heightened anxiety can further reduce the drive to move-allowing the cycle to keep spinning.
Low fitness, high anxiety
The researchers also observed that participants with lower fitness reported higher day-to-day anxiety even outside the experiment.
On an anxiety scale, the less fit group averaged 44 points, while the fitter group averaged 38 points. That difference reflects a meaningful gap in everyday emotional experience.
Interrupting this pattern takes deliberate effort. Moving your body-even when motivation is low-can gradually build a buffer against anxiety.
With each session, the next workout becomes easier, not only physically but emotionally as well.
Why this matters for the future
Anxiety disorders place a huge financial burden on healthcare systems. In Europe, treating one patient with anxiety costs about 3,874 dollars per year.
Worldwide, mental health costs could reach 6 trillion dollars by 2030. Against that backdrop, exercise is a straightforward, low-cost tool for supporting mental health.
In this study, the sample included 23 women and 17 men aged 18 to 40. All participants were healthy and avoided caffeine, alcohol and exercise for 24 hours prior to testing.
Overall, the results suggest that stronger cardiorespiratory fitness improves emotional resilience-meaning the ability to recover after stress.
Psychology also describes the idea that moderate stress can enhance performance, whereas excessive stress impairs it. Fitness may help people remain within that more balanced range.
Exercise trains both the body and the mind, and when life delivers challenges, that training may be what makes the difference.
